El color de la albura es amarillo claro y el del duramen rosado o tabaco claro. De fibra recta y olor fuerte y persistente. Se considera imputrescible e inatacable por hongos e insectos, por ello se puede emplear para construcciones sumergidas, o en exteriores e interior, chapas para revestimientos decorativos y en la construcción naval.

La madera del ciprés común se utiliza en ebanistería fina, carpintería, construcción y escultura. Dada su resistencia a la humedad, desde la antigüedad se ha utilizado en la industria naval, así como en aquellos trabajos expuestos a la humedad o al agua. También se utiliza para la construcción de guitarras, es la madera tradicional en la elaboración de guitarras flamencas, con un timbre muy característico.

La extraordinaria longevidad que tienen los cipreses, su apariencia estilizada y espiritual, su follaje siempre verde, junto con la incorruptibilidad de su madera ha propiciado que, en numerosos pueblos, este árbol sea un símbolo de inmortalidad.

Como ejemplo de la durabilidad de la madera de ciprés, se suele citar que las puertas de la Basílica de San Pedro en el Vaticano son de este árbol y transcurridos mil doscientos años, siguen sin mostrar signos visibles de deterioro.
